Affordable Alternatives Wine Tasting
On Tuesday we packed out the upstairs of Stony Street again with another delicious wine tasting. The theme this time was “Affordable Alternatives”. Tips on how to save money while still buying great quality wine would be popular at any time of year, but especially so after the expense of the summer holidays! So it was an incredibly informative and useful tasting hosted by our Head of Wine, Sarah and owner, Kent.
Navigating the shelves for great bargains is an exciting challenge which both Sarah and Kent happen to enjoy, so they were keen to share their top tips with the assembled. For those not able to attend, we thought we would share the wines tasted so that everyone can benefit from this knowledge. Therefore, please find below the wines chosen by Kent and Sarah with their retail price in our wine shop and written underneath are the wines which they are affordable alternatives to:
Amélie Les Bubbles, Blanquette de Limoux Demi-Sec (£12.50)
Affordable Alternative to Prosecco
LIV Vinho Verde, Minho, Portugal (£14)
Affordable Alternative to French Sauvignon
Talò Verdeca Puglia Italy (£11)
Affordable Alternative to Viognier
Mount Edward, Ted Pinot Noir, Central Otago, New Zealand (£24)
Affordable Alternative to Burgundy
Tour des Gendres Rouge, Bergerac, France (£12.50)
Affordable Alternative to Bordeaux
Domaine de Roudene, Fitou 'Cuvee Jean de Pila' Languedoc, France (£13)
Affordable Alternative to Rhône (Châteauneuf-du-Pape particularly)
We hope all those who came and who read this will be encouraged to move away from the wines that often we return to out of habit and instead discover alternatives that offer fantastic value and a whole lot more wine in your glass!
